How to Adjust Test Options

The following steps will be completed within the process of deploying a test. However, as there are several steps to adjust test options, we have presented them on a different page. When you deploy a test, you will need to set the test options. After you have selected the test to add to your content area, you will set the test options. These instructions are presented by section in the Test Options page.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to Adjust Test Options

Test Availability

  1. Under Test Availability next to Make Link Available, select Yes or No.
Please Note:  If you select No, your test will not be available to students.
  2. Next to Add a New Announcement for this Test, select Yes or No.
  3. Check Multiple Attempts if you want to give students a chance to take the test again if they have technology issues.
Please Note:  If you click this option, you will also need to select to Allow Unlimited Attempts or a specific number which you provide.
  4. You can check Force Completion to force students to complete the test the first time they open it, although this is no longer recommended.
  5. Instead, check Set Timer and then set the time you want to allow students.
  6. Set the Display After and Display Until settings if you wish. These will allow you to release the test at or until a specific time.
  7. Check Password if you want to password-protect the test.

Test availability exceptions

Test Availability Exceptions allow you to select one or more groups of students and make a number of exceptions to the already established availability settings. You can use exceptions to provide an accommodation to a disabled student or provide accommodations for technology and language differences. These settings may be changed at any time, even after the test has been attempted by some students. If conflicts in rules occur, the most permissive settings for that user or group is granted. For example, students would receive the greatest number of attempts, longest availability time, and so on. You can create exceptions for:

  • Number of attempts
  • Time of test
  • Auto submit on or off
  • Availability of test using start and end dates
  • Force completion on or off

Add test availability exceptions if needed.

Due date

If you want, provide a Due Date for the test. You can also choose if you wish to allow students to start the test if the due date has passed.
Set a due date for the assessment if desired.

Self-assessment options

Under Self-Assessment Options, select whether you want to include the test in the grade center calculations or hide the results from the instructor.
Sel-assessment options allow you to hide the scores from the grade center to exclude from grade calculations.

Test feedback

Under Test Feedback, select the feedback option for students when they finish the test. By setting up rules, you can set the release of progressive feedback to keep test results secure and prevent cheating. The table below was pulled from Blackboard documentation.

Determine how and when you want students to view test results and feedback.

Test presentation

  1. Under Test Presentation, select whether you want to display the test All at Once or One at a Time. If you select One at a Time, you can also choose to prevent backtracking in the test.
Please Note:  In our current version of Blackboard Learn, tests that contain more than 50 questions may have problems submitting the exam if questions are displayed All at Once rather than One at a Time. We recommend using the One at a Time method for tests with a large number of questions.
  2. If you want, you can choose to Randomize Questions for each test attempt.
Test questions can be view all at once or randomized.

  3. When you are finished, click Submit.
