What is a VPN

The purpose of the VPN (Virtual Private Network) is to provide a secure, encrypted connection for transferring data. It allows faculty, staff, and students to conveniently access many network resources from off-campus. These resources include certain internal systems, file servers, internal websites, and workstations. When a computer connects to Missouri State University's VPN, it is treated as part of the university network — even if the device is off-campus or using a different Internet service provider.

How do I connect to the VPN?

The VPN client supported by Missouri State University is called GlobalProtect.

  1. Request VPN Access: Before you can connect to Missouri State's VPN, you must first be granted permission. Use this form to Request VPN Access.
NOTE: If you previously had access to the legacy Cisco VPN solution, then you may not need to request access again.

  2. Install and Connect: Once access is granted, you can use the guides below to install and connect to the VPN to your Windows or MacOS computer.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to https://remote.missouristate.edu/.
    1. Sign in with your MSU Account if prompted.
  2. Select 'Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent'.
  3. Once the file has finished downloading, navigate to the folder you saved the file (the default location is often 'Downloads').

Open the software installation file 'GlobalProtect.pkg'.

  4. Install GlobalProtect using the default options.
    1. Optional: you may want to select 'GlobalProtect System extensions' so that GlobalProtect can run automatically after a reboot.
  5. If prompted, enter your Mac Username and Password, and then click 'Install Software' to begin the installation.

  6. After installation is complete, close the installer.

  7. Once installed, GlobalProtect should be docked in your app tray and you may get a Welcome screen.  You can click 'Get Started' to continue.

To run GlobalProtect in the future, look for the GlobalProtect "globe" icon in the app tray.

If it is not present, the app tray may have reached the maximum icons it will display. Remove unwanted icons from being displayed via Settings -> Menu Bar.  If GlobalProtect is not running at all, you may need to navigate to your Applications and open GlobalProtect Client.

  8. Type in 'remote.missouristate.edu' in the Portal text box and Connect.
