Migrating Existing Content into Brightspace from Blackboard

Before you can migrate your content from Blackboard, you must first create an export file. Once you have an export file you can then upload your content to Brightspace.

Creating an Export File in Blackboard:

  1. Log into Blackboard and access the course you would like to create an export file for.
  2. On the bottom left of your course site, under the Control Panel, click to expand Packages and Utilities, then click Export/Archive Course

3. Select Export Package.

4. Select the second option on each of the File Attachments options. Select Calculate Size.

Please Note: If your course is larger than 2 GB it cannot imported into Brightspace. Access the course Content Collection and remove any unnecessary or duplicated files to reduce the course size. See How to Clean Up Course Files for detailed instructions.

5. Choose Select All and then select Submit to begin the export process.

6. Next, you'll see a success bar at the top of the page. It can take up to 30 minutes for your course to export. An email will be delivered to you when the operation is complete.

7. After you receive the notification email, return to the Export/Archive Course page to access a link to download the export package. Simply click on the link to download the zip package to your computer. Do not open the zip file. The package must stay zipped to preserve the content and functionality. If you are a Mac user, you will need to change your Safari settings to stop the automatic unzipping of package files.

Uploading the Export File to Brightspace:

NOTE: Before importing content into your Brightspace course, it is recommended you access the grade book and run the Setup Wizard.

There are two places you can upload a course package to Brightspace: through Course Content or through the Course Admin page.

6. Once you have added your zip file, select Import All Components. After the process has run you will have the option to View the Content, Import Another Package, or Review and Manage Dates.
