How Different is Omni CMS?

If you are a former editor within OpenText, you may find this resource helpful.

Differences between Omni CMS and Web Press

  • Omni allows you to edit individual pages by clicking the "hidden" link at the bottom of each page and logging in. With Web Press you have to login and then navigate to the page you wish to edit or use the page id to search.
  • We are using the term "files" instead of "assets" in reference to images, documents, pdf files, etc. Assets are reusable content in Omni.
  • Omni operates on a one-step process for publishing files. Web Press made it necessary to submit and release and then publish. Also it isn't necessary to publish out the individual parts (pages) within the web page. No more dots!
  • Web Press is built with "pages." Each element on the web page is defined as a page and there are rows and content blocks. With Omni you choose your template, define your page parameters and build your web page using tools such as assets, snippets, and components within editable page regions.
  • Rich text areas are now called editable regions but they take more than just copy – they accept assets, components and snippets.
  • Campus maps are handled differently. Campus map is no longer available as a full page element. It’s a two-column component with contact details on the left side and a map on the right. Within Open Text it was necessary to select location ID to pull a map onto the page. Within Omni it is added to the Contact Details component as an asset.
  • The Statistic Block within the pattern library is now the Call to Action (CTA) above Highlight component.
  • Call to Action is now available as an independent element to be centered or left aligned.
  • "Carousel" in pattern library Is now called "Spotlight Gallery (full-width)" in Omni.
  • Images, documents, pdfs will be stored in a _Files folder within your particular section (no more navigating to a “common” area with folders for each section).

Added features

  • Can set reminders. Send them to yourself or to others. Can set a reminder to let you know when your page is "stale" (hasn't been updated for some time – You can specify the time when the page has gone stale).
  • When publishing you will be given the option to do a "final page check." This includes: W3C Valid / accessibility, etc.
  • As part of your dashboard, you have a gadget navigation bar that you may configure. This looks like a electrical plug on the left side of your screen. It may contain:  Checked out content, images, activity, snippets, dependency tag info, url shortener, YouTube, workflow, page parameters, link check, page info.
  • Check in and check out pages using a lightbulb icon. This only allows one person at a time to edit the page.
  • Images / documents are now given a "dependency tag." The dependency tag prevents links from breaking when a file is renamed or moved.
