A computer asks for a Bitlocker Recovery Key when it detects a change in hardware/firmware or if a potential security threat is detected. Bitlocker locks the drive to protect the data on the device. The most common causes of a Bitlocker Recovery Key include changes to your hardware(such as a new motherboard being installed), BIOS updates, Windows updates, driver updates, and plugging in new USB devices. This article will detail the necessary steps to find your own device’s Bitlocker Recovery Key.
- Visit the following link: https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list
- Sign in with Your Missouri State Account and password.
- A list of your devices will appear. Find the service tag that matches the device you are trying to find the BitLocker key for. (The service tag for your device can normally be found on a sticker somewhere on your device). Once you find the correct device, click the dropdown arrow.
- Then Select “View Bitlocker Key”.
- Click “Show Recovery Key”. There may be multiple recovery keys. Try entering the first key listed on your device requiring the Bitlocker Key. If that key is incorrect, try the subsequent keys.
