Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. When using Respondus LockDown Browser to take a test, you will be unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.
Step-by-Step Guide
- The Respondus Lockdown Browser installer also includes a short video tutorial which students should watch prior to installing and using the LockDown Browser for the first time.
Please Note:
This download URL is unique for Missouri State University.
Do not download the LockDown Browser from another website.
- Select Install Now.

- Save File

- Navigate to the Downloads folder, or wherever you saved the installer file.
Please Note: The installer file will be more than likely saved in the Downloads folder.
- Double-click on the LockDownSFX.exe file to start the installation. If a Security Windows comes up asking if you want to run the file, Click Run.
- Choose a Setup Language and click Next.

- A "Preparing setup" windows will run.

- Accept the License Agreement, Click Next.

- The "Installation Process" will begin.

- Click Finish to complete the installation.

- To launch the Respondus Lockdown Browser, double-click on the shortcut that was created on the desktop.
Please Note: Since Respondus lockdown Browser locks down the environment, you will need to close any other applications or web browsers before you begin.

LockDown Browser will begin loading. You may be prompted to close any applications that you have open.

You can now log in into Blackboard using your BearPass account.
- Download the Respondus Lockdown Browser installer by clicking Install Now.

- Click Save. Depending on your computer's configuration the .zip file will most likely be saved to your Downloads folder.

- TheInstallLDBPackage.zip file will look like this in your Downloads folder.

- Double click on the InstallLDBPackage.zip file to unzip the file. You will see a yellow box labelled Install Respondus LockDown Browser.pkg. Double click this file to begin the installation process.

- Once you click on the Install Respondus LockDown Browser.pkg the install screen will appear. Click the Continue button to begin.

- Review the Software License Agreement and click Continue and click Agree to the terms of service.


- On the next screen you can choose an Install Location. Typically you will want to install the program on your Macintosh HD. Click Install to start the installation of the program.

- Once the installation is done the following screen will be displayed. The install is complete and you can click the Close button.

- To open the Respondus LockDown Browser just go to your Application Folder and it should be listed as an available application.

Please Note:
A pop-up may appear indicating that Respondus LockDown Browser requires you to un-check the Remote Management settings in order to open. Follow the directions that appear. If you cannot change these settings, please request to have a lab supervisor assist you.
Using LockDown Browser with a WebCam (Respondus Monitor)
You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, nonproctored exam. (The webcam feature is sometimes referred to as “Respondus Monitor.”) Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone for this option. Refer to the Respondus Student Quick Start Guide for complete instructions on using Respondus LockDown Browser with a webcam.
