How to Use Self-Service Password Reset and Account Unlock (SSPR)

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is available for all current students, staff, and faculty (including emeritus faculty and staff with active accounts) who have registered two of the three security options below. See How to Set Up Your Account Security Information for more.
• Non-MSU email
• Phone
• Authenticator App

If you can't remember your account password or need to change it for security reasons, you can easily do so yourself. Similarly, if you unsuccessfully tried to log in too many times and your account has been locked, you can also unlock your account using the steps below.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to Reset Your Password

  1. Navigate to missouristate.edu/Account and select Unlock Your Account. 

  2. Enter your Office 365 username under User ID and enter the security characters, then click Next.

  3. Select the I forgot my password option and click Next.

  4. Choose the first method for how you would like to verify your identity. The options you see will be based on the verification methods you set up on your account, so you will be able to choose from approving a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app, entering a code from the Authenticator app, a call/text to your mobile phone, or an email sent to your personal email address.

    1. Approve a notification on my authenticator app: Click Send Notification to receive a push notification on your mobile device.

      1. Select Approve on the notification that was sent to your authenticator app.

    2. Enter a code from my authenticator app: open the Microsoft Authenticator app or the 3rd-party authenticator app that you use.

      1. On the webpage, enter the code that appears below your username in the app, and then click Next.

    3. Email my alternate email: Confirm that you recognize the address listed for you and click the Email button to send a verification code to that address.

      1. Enter the code that was sent to your email and click Next.

    4. Text my mobile phone: Enter the phone number associated with your account and click the Text button to send a verification code to that number.

      1. Enter the code that was sent your phone number and click Next.

    5. Call my mobile phone: Enter the phone number associated with your account and click the Call button to receive an automated call to that number.

      1. Answer the phone call and press the pound (#) key when prompted.

  5. Choose the second method for how you would like to verify your identity using the methods above.

  6. Once you have verified your identity successfully, enter and confirm your new password then click Finish
    The password must be 12 characters in length and will be case sensitive if capital letters are used.

  7. You will see a success message that your password has been reset. Use the click here link to sign in with your new password.

How to Unlock Your Account

  1. Navigate to missouristate.edu/Account and select Unlock Your Account. 

  2. Enter your Office 365 username under User ID and enter the security characters, then click Next.​​​​​

  3. Select I know my password, but still can't sign in option and click Next.

  4. Choose the first method for how you would like to verify your identity. The options you see will be based on the verification methods you set up on your account, so you will be able to choose from approving a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app, entering a code from the Authenticator app, a call/text to your mobile phone, or an email sent to your personal email address.

  6. Once you have verified your identity successfully, you will see a success message that your account has been unlocked. Use the click here link to sign in with your existing password.
