Passport VPN to New VPN Transition Guide for Windows

Note: To provide the most secure access to our systems and data, the Passport VPN connection will be disabled soon. Users requiring VPN access for their work or classes should follow the steps below to remove the old Cisco client and install the new client that uses multi-factor authentication to connect to vpn.missouristate.edu. For assistance with this process, contact your IT support staff or submit a request for help.

There are three main steps to transition to the new VPN:

1. Delete the current Cisco client from your computer
2.
Install the new Cisco client
3.
Set up your new VPN connection

Delete the current Cisco client from your computer

The following instructions are for removing the client in Windows 10.

  1. In the Search bar located in the lower left corner of the screen.

  2. Type "Add or Remove Programs".

  3. Click on the "Add or remove programs" icon.

  4. Under Apps & features section, search or scroll to find the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

  5. Click on the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client icon or text, and select Uninstall. You may be prompted for administrator login on your computer. If you are not set up as an Administrator on your device, contact your support area, or submit a request for help.

  6. It is recommenced that you restart your computer once the program is completely uninstalled. This will make sure that the program is completely removed. 

Install the new Cisco client

Once you have uninstalled the previous Cisco client, you can now install the new client that supports multi-factor authentication.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to https://vpn.missouristate.edu/

  2. In the Login window, select the default GROUP *MissouriState, then click Login.

    Please Note: 

    If you will be using an assigned special group, follow this guide to initially set up the Missouri State VPN.

    Then refer to How to Connect to a Special VPN Group.

    Make sure the login window is selected for the MissouriState group.
     
  3. You will be directed to a Missouri State sign in page. You will sign in with your Office 365 Login which contains one of the three options below.
    1. BearPassLogin@missouristate.edu
    2. BearPassLogin@live.missouristate.edu
    3. BearPassLogin@login.missouristate.edu

  4. You will be directed to a page to enter the password for your account. Then click Sign in.
     
  5. If you are already utilizing Multi-Factor Authentication for Office 365, you will be prompted for an approval.

  6. If you have not used Multi-Factor Authentication before, you will receive a message that more information is required. Click Next to set up your security options.

  7. After a successful sign-in, you will be directed to the VPN installer download page.

  8. Click Save File to download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN application.
    Please Note: 
    If you are using Microsoft Edge or the Google Chrome web browser, the download bar will be shown in the bottom left corner of the browser window.
    Edge or Chrome dowload bar will be shown in the bottom corner.

    If you are using the Mozilla Firefox web browser, there will be a download pop-up window asking for the file to be saved.
    When using Firefox the download will open in a pop-up window.
  9. To begin the installation process, navigate to the location where the installation file was downloaded to and open the file. The file is typically in the C:\Users\BearPassID\Downloads folder.
    Click on the installation package where the file was downloaded.

     
  10. Click Next

  11. Select the options I accept the terms in the License Agreement, then click Next.

     
  12. Click Install.
    Click install to begin installin the Cisco AnyConnect client.


    Please Note: 
    If you are prompted with a User Account Control window, click Yes.
  13. Once the installation is complete, click Finish.

Set up your new VPN connection

  1. To continue setting up your VPN, open the Cisco AnyConnect application. You can do this by navigating to the Windows Start Menu and searching for Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

     
  2. If it still says passport.missouristate.edu you will not get logged in
    Type vpn.missouristate.edu. Then click Connect.
  3. You will be directed to a Missouri State authentication window that requires your BearPass account login information.
     
  4. You will be directed to a Missouri State sign-in page. You will sign in with your Office 365 Login which consists of one of the three options below:
    1. BearPassLogin@missouristate.edu
    2. BearPassLogin@live.missouristate.edu
    3. BearPassLogin@login.missouristate.edu

  5. You will be directed to a page to enter the password for your BearPass ID. Then click Sign in.

  6. You will see a screen similar to the one below when logging in with MFA on the VPN, depending on the preferred verification option you selected in the MFA enrollment process. The example below uses the Microsoft Authenticator app as the preferred option.

  7. If you are unable to authenticate with your preferred option, you will be able to choose another authentication method from your selected options. Simply select Sign in another way to use a different method.
    If you are unable to sign in with your preferred option, select to sign-in another way.

     
  8. Choose one of the available options to approve your sign-on attempt.

  9. Once connected, there will be an AnyConnect icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar with a lock showing that you are connected to the Missouri State VPN and are ready to access Missouri State resources from off-campus.
    Click the icon in the taskbar for AnyConnect VPN.
